Description

Filipinos dig adventure in all forms. And while it is a known fact that the Philippines is endowed with beautiful islands brimming with utter adventure, it is also known that Filipinos are gastronomically adventurous in nature.

Take balut, for example. Balut, when roughly translated, means a thing that is wrapped. Thing is, it actually is duck embryo that is fertilized. It is boiled and then eaten straight from the shell.

This street food is not for the faint hearted, though. With a 17 year-old embryo, you can somehow distinguish the underdeveloped chick. It may gross out first-timers but fret not. Balut is packed with proteins and vitamins. It's also a good source of cholesterol and calcium. Some people even consider balut an aphrodisiac.

Filipinos say it is best eaten when dipped on vinegar or salt. The experience is actually worth the try although most would rather pass the opportunity. Surely, those who didn't go for it are letting go of a unique food adventure.
