“A suspenseful roller-coaster ride.”—Karin Slaughter • “Lisa Gardner always delivers heart-stopping suspense.”—Harlan Coben

He knows everything about you—including the first place you’ll hide.

On a warm summer night in one of Boston’s working-class neighborhoods, an unthinkable crime has been committed: Four members of a family have been brutally murdered. The father—and possible suspect—now lies clinging to life in the ICU. Murder-suicide? Or something worse? Veteran police detective D. D. Warren is certain of only one thing: There’s more to this case than meets the eye.

Danielle Burton is a survivor, a dedicated nurse whose passion is to help children at a locked-down pediatric psych ward. But she remains haunted by a family tragedy that shattered her life nearly twenty-five years ago. The dark anniversary is approaching, and when D. D. Warren and her partner show up at the facility, Danielle immediately realizes: It has started again.

A devoted mother, Victoria Oliver has a hard time remembering what normalcy is like. But she will do anything to ensure that her troubled son has some semblance of a childhood. She will love him no matter what. Nurture him. Keep him safe. Protect him. Even when the threat comes from within her own house.

The lives of these three women unfold and connect in unexpected ways, as sins from the past emerge—and stunning secrets reveal just how tightly blood ties can bind. Sometimes the most devastating crimes are the ones closest to home.

The ending had so much potential, but left more questions than answers.

I am done reading reviews, if you read her books in order they are very easy to follow and understand. I enjoyed this book very much and I will continue to read her novels. This was a good one, I have really enjoyed reading her work and I love how she keeps the main characters throughout, she builds upon each character with each novel, you learn more and more about them and how they tick, and that is the point.

Page turners although I’m not totally a fan of DD and think she’s not the main attraction. Let’s see what’s to come…. I’m def hooked. bizarre in some ways after reading the 3 prior novels in this series but it took me in and kept me glued until the end which was satisfactory. I really like Lisa Gardner and can’t wait to start the next one…
  • Dated, over-rated

In addition to above, and the one note caricatures that serve as protagonists and victims, this book also lacks the rigorous background research into mental health and trauma that should have been a truly serious first step for this author. I had to check the publication date because I couldn’t believe such a naive and ill-informed approach to a serious subject was written only 10 years ago.

Really interesting characters, although the main character DD was the least-developed and the most shallow. Even though DD is the main character in many of Lisa Gardner's books, I found her to be unconvincing in this one, particularly the constant repitition of her sexual appetite as well as her actual appetite. Very overdone and annoying. Come on, we get it! Maybe she could have spent a little more time on this one making all the characters have more depth? Otherwise, good story development that moves at a crisp pace and rarely leaves the reader bored. Good read.
