Description

Pastor Dane Ortlund Explores Jesus's Heart to Reveal His Tender Love for Sinners and Suffers

Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God's wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures?

This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as "gentle and lowly in heart," longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God's deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering.

These chapters take us into the depths of Christ's very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.
Draws on Writings from the Puritans: Including Thomas Goodwin, Richard Sibbes, John Bunyan, John Owen, and others Provides a Unique Perspective: Confronts readers' typical thoughts on God's heartScripture-Based: Explores passages throughout the whole Bible to get a full picture of God's heart for sinners

It made me cry, it made me laugh, I’m going to read it again and I never read books twice. What a joy

This teaching is very comforting and biblical. We all have the mindset that God is mad at us, however, using scripture Dane shows us the exact opposite. This is a book I will read it in sections over and over hopefully for the rest of my life alongside of works like AW Tozier and all the classic Christian authors!

This was medicine for my soul. I needed to be told that Jesus is with me even in my failures. That His love is far greater. That I need to abide in Him and He will abide in me. This showed me that Jesus’ heart does not look at me the way I look at me, in shame. What freedom
  • Fantastic!

This is a wonderful devotional on the heart of Christ many of the chapters drew me near Jesus by helping me shed wrong thoughts about how he perceives me. I recommend this book to both Christian and non. It will bless you by revealing the heart of Jesus.
  • Read in small doses.

I made the mistake of binge reading a book that should be taken one chapter per day. There are a lot of good repetitious reminders that feel tedious all at once, but feel refreshing when spread out. Every chapter makes a good and important point answering questions I might have posed. The author’s commentary can feel awfully redundant, but maybe that’s only because he draws good attention to scriptures and historical authors who make the book’s points well.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It’s vision of the heart and love of Christ is so refreshing and completely rooted in scripture. The message of this book is, I believe, just what the church and the world needs right now. If the church allowed itself to bask in the beauty portrayed here the world would have a very different church to behold - and might just be drawn to Jesus by what they see. Thank you, Dane, for this gem.
