On March 16, 2018, just twenty-six hours before his scheduled retirement from the organization he had served with distinction for more than two decades, Andrew G. McCabe was fired from his position as deputy director of the FBI. President Donald Trump celebrated on Twitter: "Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy."

In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career, and an impassioned defense of the FBI's agents, and of the institution's integrity and independence in protecting America and upholding our Constitution.

McCabe started as a street agent in the FBI's New York field office, serving under director Louis Freeh. He became an expert in two kinds of investigations that are critical to American national security: Russian organized crime—which is inextricably linked to the Russian state—and terrorism. Under Director Robert Mueller, McCabe led the investigations of major attacks on American soil, including the Boston Marathon bombing, a plot to bomb the New York subways, and several narrowly averted bombings of aircraft. And under James Comey, McCabe was deeply involved in the controversial investigations of the Benghazi attack, the Clinton Foundation's activities, and Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

The Threat recounts in compelling detail the time between Donald Trump's November 2016 election and McCabe's firing, set against a page-turning narrative spanning two decades when the FBI's mission shifted to a new goal: preventing terrorist attacks on Americans. But as McCabe shows, right now the greatest threat to the United States comes from within, as President Trump and his administration ignore the law, attack democratic institutions, degrade human rights, and undermine the U.S. Constitution that protects every citizen.

Important, revealing, and powerfully argued, The Threat tells the true story of what the FBI is, how it works, and why it will endure as an institution of integrity that protects America.

  • An excellent and enlightening read, but...

Revealing and informative. I had my suspicions, but after reading McCabe's account of his meetings with the President in the Oval Office, I don't know what to believe. I am a staunch republican, but based on what I think about Trump, McCabe's inside view of the WH and circumstances surrounding his and Comey's firings comes off as the voice of reason and truth. Trump is an inexperienced politician. McCabe, on the other hand, is a corrupt, and treasonous liar.

This book gives the reader a glimpse into what is required to get a job at the FBI (and it’s not easy). It contains stories of an FBI agent which, in their own right, make a good book. But it climaxes with the telling of a courageous effort to maintain integrity, fairness, and rule of law of a great nation that is under threat from outside forces and internal corruption. Thank you, Mr. McCabe, for your bravery and your service. And for this important account of this profoundly unsettling chapter in our country’s history. You are a true patriot and you deserve better than what you got.

This book is an extremely timely warning for the future of the US and it’s democratic form of government. It’s subject matter is not about crisis and chaos that is the current president, although he is a big part of it. It is really about the value of the people that work, not posture, daily to serve all Americans and protect the integrity and the quality of life in the US during times of trial and adversity. This is a solid history lesson of the last 25 years of law enforcement, terrorism, counterterrorism, national security and the processes and procedures of those communities in our government which keep us and our government safe and stable. Read it being open to the factual descriptions the author writes and you will learn a great deal about what is at stake in our current situation both domestically and internationally. Also, if you ever wondered how a person decides to work for the FBI, CIA or DOJ this will answer that question in a broad manner. Good tight writing and disciplined editing. Let’s hope we continue to get more people like Mr. McCabe to choose civil service careers in the US.

I didn’t really know what to expect when I bought this book and opened it. But I got a highly useful insight into how the modern-day FBI works and how cases are investigated. McCabe doesn’t feel like any AG the FBI worked with was perfect, but his disdain for the ineptitude of the current administration is clear and his examples damning. If you want to understand some of the basics of investigating racketeering, terrorism and public officials, this book is for you.

Mr McCabe- Thank you for sharing your story and more importantly thank you for actually being the guy who it’s about. I’m glad people like you are out there, waking up every morning and finding the will to continue to just do what needs to be done. You’re one of the good guys. I hope there are more like you that are still in positions to do the right thing, and I pray that in the future you will have the opportunity to do so again. This should not have happened to you. This should not have happened to your family. This should not have happened to us. No one would blame you if you declined, but when you are again called to serve, please answer the call. We all need guys like you. Everyone else- Read this book.
  • Delusions of a Traitor?

An indictment of an FBI headquarters with a political agenda. An agency with a rogue leadership whose mission was to overturn an election. Who are they to decide who should be president? A lot of facts are cherry picked in this book in order to weave a justification but too much is left out that would paint instead a picture of treason. In time, McCabe will see a prison cell for what he has done along with James Comey and his henchmen. They have brought great dishonor to the rank and file of the FBI. Read Dan Bongino’s Spygate to fill in what McCabe leaves out. Bongino’s is fully footnoted with facts from mostly liberal sources to boot! Read them both and you will see through the fog of Mueller’s investigation.

Great book allowing us a better understanding of the FBI and the very difficult job of keeping our country safe. Intelligent; thoughtfully written; his words and stories paint a picture of the “bad guys”, how the FBI carefully and methodically finds them and brings them to justice. I am particularly enjoying the CD version, narrated by Andrew himself, giving his personal inflection on the stories as he recounts them. It is shameful the way our “president” casts such aspersions on this formidable intelligence agency. We absolutely need their important work. I recommend this book to anyone who believes in truth, justice, and wants to gain a better understanding of FBI protocols and procedures.
